This is a continuation of my reading of Victor Herman’s book, Coming Out Of The Ice, An Unexpected Life, out of print for some time. Just a reminder of why I am doing this. I consider this book to be extremely important, because it is a glimpse into what we can expect if we do not resist the oncoming tyranny. Victor Herman, in discussing his experiences in the Soviet gulag emphasized: “Don’t think it can’t happen here.” And, it is now happening here.
The series begins here.
What does it take for a person to become one who inflicts pain on another, to the point of killing another person?
I have no answer to that question. But the phenomenon is one that has existed as long as humans have existed. Intra-species violence is not rare. Perhaps it is just an inevitable condition of animal life.
I stepped backward, one step at a time - watching both sides of the cell. I want one more to come at me, I thought. The next one I will kill.
I stood on the white towel, my back to the door.
The reading is here. As always, I hope you appreciate Victor’s words.
